Art in the Park coming Saturday

The City Park downtown will become an outdoor art gallery Saturday as at least 17 artists showcase their work for the first Art in the Park event.

The fundraiser for the Yancey Jernigan Foundation will begin at 10:30 a.m. at City Park, which is next to the courthouse downtown.

“As of now we have about 17 vendors with all being artists,” organizer Emmie Jernigan said. “We also have some local musicians playing at the gazebo and it is a free event.”

Jernigan said Jefferson Davis Community College’s PTK organization led by Sharon Peacock will be providing food for sale.

“It should be a really fun day, and we want the public to come out and enjoy it,” Jernigan said. “It should be a nice event.”

Jernigan said she hopes people in town for high school reunions will come enjoy the event as well.

“It will be a great day to have it because we will have so many out of town people here, and it will give people a chance to meet and greet and gather Saturday in Brewton. All the reunion classes will be here so we just thought it would be fun and great to see everybody and catch up and listen to music and enjoy some art. We will conclude around 2:30 p.m., but if it is late and people are still there, it will be fine.”

Jernigan said there is still time to reserve a booth for the event with proceeds from booth rental going to the foundation.

Artists committed for the event include Lee Bain, Lyn Gill, Betty Rigsby, Stephen Brissette, Faith Williston, Paula Plowman and the Greater Brewton Foundation showing the artistry of the late Louise Garrett.

Booths are available for $50 with several artists already committed to a space. To make sure of obtaining a booth, contact thouart2011@gmail.com.
