The T.R. Miller Tigers will be back at home this Friday night as they welcome the Southside-Selma Panthers to Brewton for homecoming 2013.
T.R. Miller, the No. 3-ranked team in class 3A, improved to 6-0 overall and to 4-0 in region play after shutting out Cottage Hill Friday night in Mobile 47-0.
“First of all, I thought our players did what we told them to do last week,” Tiger head coach Jamie Riggs said. “They got prepared for the game. We did a good job of handling the trip down there and everything also when the game started. I thought we really did a good job with the kicking game and got the ball in good field position. We had some good punt returns to set us up. That was good and offensively we came out and blocked well and moved the ball well and scored some early in the first quarter. Our defense held them and made them punt some in the first half. I just really think the difference in the game was field position. We also got to play a lot of people in the second half. All-in-all it was good win.”
Southside-Selma is 2-4 overall this season and is 1-3 in region play. Southside lost to Opp Friday night 33-14. T.R. Miller is 4-0 all-time against the Panthers after winning 48-18 last year.
“Southside, just watching them on film, they seem to be a typical team and we know they have speed and they can throw the ball,” Riggs said. “They have just been a little inconsistent some with their blocking some, but that tends to get better as the season goes along. They have some good defensive backs, which will be a nice challenge for us. They do a good job of covering people.
“They are always dangerous on offense and with their return people. They cause you some concern. They haven’t won a few games because they have some weaknesses and they have not blocked great at times. I don’t think their defensive linemen have played as good as they have last year. We have the challenge of having to handle homecoming and getting ready to play Southside.
“We have to go out and see if we can win this thing which is always a challenge on homecoming.”
Game time is set for 7 p.m. in Brewton with festivities planned throughout the day.
