Dominique and defense: TRM rolls Straughn for region championship

Brewton—It was a battle most had been looking forward to seeing all week and some had even been looking forward to seeing it since the beginning of the season‑a top-10 battle between two undefeated teams in the region and the No. 3 team in the state against the No. 5 team for the region championship.
But while a battle was expected, it was not seen as the No. 3-ranked T.R. Miller Tigers cruised their way to the region championship with a 42-7 win over the Straughn Tigers.
With the win, T.R. Miller improved to 8-0 overall and to 6-0 in region play while claiming the overall No. 1 seed for the playoffs. Straughn fell to 6-2 overall and to 5-1 in region play and captured the second seed in the playoffs. Both will host home games in the first round of the playoffs in three weeks.
T.R. Milled led Straughn 7-0 after the first quarter before erupting with 22 points in the third quarter to take a 29-0 lead at the half.
In the third quarter, T.R. Miller outscored Straughn 13-0 to increase their lead to 42-0 heading into the final quarter of play.
In the fourth, Straughn outscored the Tigers of T.R. Miller 7-0 after Daryl George broke a 46-yard run for the lone Straughn touchdown of the night.
“Straughn has an outstanding team and that is probably the best we have played in 10 years,” T.R. Miller head coach Jamie Riggs said. “We were ready to play tonight and from the get-go we were able to block them and get points on the board. I think the whole key to the game was just our defense. We got turnovers in the first half and we didn’t give up a big play. Straughn had been very explosive. I was really tickled with our defense.”
