After months of work by outside consultants working closely with Brewton officials and residents, the City of Brewton has a master plan.

The Brewton City Council adopted the plan, developed by planners with Goodwyn Mills and Cawood, at its Monday meeting.

What happens next, though, will be dictated by available funds.

“We’re applying for grants steadily,” Mayor Yank Lovelace said.

Some of the work has already begun — 40 acres have been deeded to the city for a new park across the creek from Burnt Corn Creek Park, and an outfitter is already taking adventurers on canoe trips and horse rides in the area.

Planner Cathy Gerachis, who led Goodwyn Mills and Cawood’s work, said using the creek and the surrounding parks allows the city to make the best use of its geography.

“When you begin to understand the geography of the creeks and flood plain, you understand why businesses, houses and schools are located where they are located,” Gerachis said.

The creeks, she said, “hold some of the keys to Brewton’s future development.”

City officials have said that using the parks for both local quality of life projects and events and to attract visitors for ecotourism.

“The whole plan is about economic development,” Lovelace said.

Future plans for the parks include a zipline course, RV park and pavilions.

The master plan also includes suggestions for new signage at the city’s entrances and parks and other plans for the Alco and Sowell Road areas.

Other initiatives have also already begun, including twice monthly farmer’s markets at Jennings/Burnt Corn Creek Park and regular events in the parks.
