BREWTON‑‑‑In a game that featured a total of 82 points scored and almost 1,400 combined total yards of offense, the No. 2-ranked T.R. Miller Tigers outlasted the American Christian Academy Patriots 54-28.
In the win for the Tigers of T.R. Miller, Dominique Jackson led the Tigers offensively as he had 188 yards on 11 carries and scored five touchdowns. Jackson scored on runs of 80, 12, 46, 18 and 11.
T.R. Miller had two other backs rush over 100 yards in the win as Kameron Coleman had 113 yards on seven carries and had an 80-yard score to go along with Jacksons.
“We knew they could throw the ball,” T.R. Miller head coach Jamie Riggs said. “The difference in the second half was we got them quite a few times. We were able to get a few turnovers there and that was a big deal. In the first half we didn’t do a job of covering, or tackling, or putting any pressure on the quarterback at all. But we were able to do that in the second half. We just felt like we needed to put some points like that and have some explosive plays. I thought we did a good job of that and getting that done. I was disappointed we didn’t take better care of the ball in the second half. We lost an opportunity to score down there one time. Another time at the end of the game, we had several penalties and we can’t do that if we want to win ball games.”
McHenry Coleman added 159 yards on 12 carries and scored on runs of 56 and 7 yards.
While the Tiger were racking up the yards on offense‑521 yards on 44 carries‑ACA was doing their damage in the air as they had 377 passing yards.
Austin Mohlenbrok finished 19-for-35 and had two interceptions. Mohlenbrok had 30 yards rushing on 14 carries. Jon Hyche finished with seven yards on four carries and had one touchdown.
Mohlebrok connected with nine different receivers in the loss with Carter McGill leading the way with five catches for 184 yards and two touchdowns. Collin Crowe had an 18-yard touchdown catch for ACA.
Austin Akins finished with 33 yards on seven carries. No. 42 (not listed on roster) had 34 yards on six carries.
T.R. Miller led ACA 13-6 after one quarter of play after running only two plays with Jackson and Kameron Coleman having touchdown runs of 80 yards each. Jon Hyche had ACA’s score in the first quarter on a 3-yard run.
In the second quarter, T.R. Miller outscored ACA 21-15 to hold a 34-21 lead at the half.
In the third quarter, the Tigers doubled up ACA 14-7 to grab a 48-28 lead. In the fourth quarter, the Tigers added their final touchdown of the night to help grab the 26-point win.
“We made some good halftime adjustments,” TRM defensive coordinator Chris Baxter said. “Basically we gave up some plays and some things that you can’t do in the first half that you can’t do if you want to win football games. We got a few turnovers and got some pressure on the quarterback. It goes hand-in-hand when you can do those types of things and get pressure on the quarterback. We were able to get some turnovers and that was a big difference. The offense played good tonight when they had the ball. It was just a total team win.”
T.R. Miller finished with 621 total yards of offense with 521 coming on the ground and 100 in the air.
Quarterback Kieon Smith was 5-for-8 passing. Kameron Coleman led with four catches for 95 yards.
ACA finished with 468 yards of offense with 91 coming on the ground and 377 in the air.
The Tigers had 21 first downs while ACA had 16.
With the win, T.R. Miller improved to 11-0 while ACA finished their season with a 5-6 record.
T.R. Miller will travel to Midfield next week for the second round of the class 3A state playoffs. Midfield defeated Slocomb Friday night at home 36-13.
Midfield defeated T.R. Miller last year in Midfield in the second round. The Tigers of T.R. Miller have been eliminated four straight years in the second round.
