The City of Brewton now has a voluntary recycling program for paper, plastic and metals.

Mayor Yank Lovelace said Thursday that one of the goals of his administration included a recycling program for city residents, and with the delivery early Thursday of an enclosed 30-yard container, the project is under way.

“I am very happy to see the city taking this step in the right direction, providing the opportunity for residents to do the right thing for the environment,” Lovelace said.

The container is set up in the Douglas Square Shopping Center off of Douglas Ave. (U.S. 31 North) between Subway and Farmer’s Home Furniture. Residents now have a central location with easy access and high visibility to bring recyclables at their own convenience.

Recycling is part of the city’s household waste contract with Allied Waste and costs the city $54 monthly and $140 each time the city calls for the container to be emptied. Presently, residents can deposit paper, cardboard, plastic containers, aluminum and ferrous metal containers (food cans) but no glass will be accepted.

No tires, garbage, trash or furniture may be deposited in the recycling container. Officials with Allied Waste said residents need not sort their recyclables since the container will be hauled to a separation center when it is filled. For more information, contact City Hall at 251.809.1777.
