WSN girls basketball team gets win in Red Level Christmas Tourney Thursday, boys fall

The W.S. Neal girls and boys basketball teams took to the court Thursday afternoon in the 16th annual Red Level Christmas Tournament and came away with a split.
The Lady Eagles ended their three-game losing streak with a 30-21 win over Red Level. With the win, the Lady Eagles are scheduled to play Andalusia today (Friday). No scorers or game information was known as of press time from Thursday’s game.
W.S. Neal improved to 2-8 overall with the win.
The W.S. Neal boys took on No. 6 Straughn Thursday and took a 57-37 loss to fall to 3-8 this season.
In the game Thursday, W.S. Neal trailed Straughn 19-8 after one quarter of play and 34-15 at the half following a 15-7 scoring advantage for the Tigers in the quarter.
In the third quarter, the Eagles of East Brewton were outscored 14-5 to trail 48-20 heading into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth, W.S. Neal ended the game on a 17-9 run, but took the loss by 20 points.
TyShawn Davis led W.S. Neal with 13 points and had three 3-pointers in the win.
D.J. Hodges added eight points, Treylon Watson had six, Dalton Shell had four and Kenny Walker, Malik Jones and Mike Williams all had two points each in the loss.
W.S. Neal shot 3-for-5 from the free throw line.
“We played tough against a quality opponent,” W.S. Neal head coach Anthony Hayes said. “Straughn shot the ball extremely well and are well-coached and disciplined. We have to continue to work on the little things throughout the course of the game that will allow us to be successful. I am proud of the effort from my entire team.”
W.S. Neal was scheduled to take on Georgiana today (Friday) in the second day of the tournament.
The tournament will conclude Saturday. W.S. Neal will next be in action Friday, Jan. 3 at Flomaton. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m. with the B-teams playing first followed by the girls and then the varsity teams.
