Lt. Col. James Willett Weaver

Lt. Col. James Willett Weaver, 88, known as Bo by his family and friends, died Thursday, Jan. 9, 2014, at his Lynn Haven, Fla. home.
He was born near the Brewton area on April 26, 1925. He attended Gulf Coast Military Academy and enlisted in the Army the day he graduated. He trained in Calif., and spent World War II in the Pacific theater, including Peleliu and other islands. He was also among the first troops sent into Japan after their surrender in 1945. After the war he returned to school and graduated from Auburn University with a degree in civil engineering. He was later recalled to active military service and served as a combat engineer in both Korea and Vietnam before his retirement. After retiring from military service he moved to Bay County, Fla., in 1967 and settled in Lynn Haven. He became a mathematics teacher for Mowat Junior High School, and the head of the math department.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Col. Leon Terrill Weaver and Isla Ballard Willett Weaver; a brother, Leon Terrill Weaver, Jr.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary Jo Cooper Weaver; his daughters, Lani Weaver Skidmore and Ann Weaver Johnston; his grandchildren, Laura Eischens, James Weaver, and Steve Johnston; great-grandchildren, Alex and Piper.
Memorial services will be private, and a celebration of his life will be held at a later date with Wilson Funeral Home in Panama City, Fla., directing.
