Mrs. Myrtle Elaine Cameron Brooks, 95, died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2014, in Brewton.
She was born June 17, 1918 in Birmingham to John Edward and Katie Myrtle Byram Cameron, the fourth of eleven children.
She graduated in 1937 at the top of her class from Ensley High School. In August of that year she married Auburn Edward Brooks and they remained married until his death in Feb. 2005. The couple had five children, 13 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren. She worked for years with children who were born with brain injuries. She began working at Etowah High School in 1966 and after ten years went to work for the Attalla City Board of Education until retirement in 1983.
She was preceded in death by two grandsons, Jimmy Sundy and Vince Johnson; her husband Auburn Brooks; and a son-in-law, James Sundy.
She is survived by her five children, Anita Sundy of Castleberry, Lois (Kenneth) Spraggins of Southside, Sue Brooks of Boaz, Audrey (King) McCarver of Ripley, Miss., and Auburn Brooks, Jr. of Castleberry; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.
She was a member of churches of Christ for 68 years in Birmingham, Gadsden and Huntsville.
Funeral services for Mrs. Brooks were held Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Collier-Butler Funeral Home with King McCarver and Jeremiah McCarver officiating. Interment followed at Rainbow Memorial Gardens.
