Fire chief: If power goes out, watch for fire hazards

With the possibility of a power outage as a result of the winter storm, Brewton Fire Chief Lawrence Weaver cautioned residents Tuesday about fire hazards:

• Make sure that generators are outside the home. Only put them in a garage if it is well ventilated. If a generator is connected to your house, make sure it is installed correctly.

• Don’t bring anything meant for outside cooking into the house.

• The city’s smoke alarms program is free to people inside the city limits. Firefighters will come check your smoke alarm to make sure it is in working order, change batteries if needed, or even install a smoke alarm if you don’t have one.
