A sprawling winter storm system stretching from Texas to the Eastern seaboard could dump up to 5 inches of snow on parts of Alabama as two waves of snow are anticipated to arrive by Wednesday.

However, Escambia County residents can rest easy. It’s going to be kind of icky over the next two days, but thankfully, there are no freezing temperatures in the local forecast.

Forecasters are predicting rain Tuesday and Wednesday; however, things will clear up and warm up by the weekend.

The same can’t be said for residents in parts of north and central Alabama.

Weather officials say the most imminent threat of a winter storm is in central Alabama. There, a winter storm warning will go into effect at 9 p.m. and last until midnight Wednesday.

Snow and sleet accumulations of 1-2 inches are possible tonight and Tuesday along and north a line from Aliceville, Tuscaloosa, Talladega and Heflin, the weather service said. That would include much of the Birmingham metro area.

North Alabama is also anticipating snow across the area late tonight and into Tuesday morning while the second wave is expected to drop up to 3 inches on parts of the area by Thursday morning. There, a winter storm watch will go into effect at 4 p.m. Wednesday, according to the weather service in Huntsville.
