Saturday night, the Baptist Hill Missionary Baptist Church Christian Board of Education will present a Black History play entitled “We Shall Overcome”—a play that was written and will be directed by Mrs. Relia Lee. The play will be held at 6 p.m.
“It really was a thought the Lord gave me years ago,” Lee said. “He told me to write about the Civil Rights struggle and the role Martin Luther King played in the struggle. The Lord just start giving and I began to write.”
Lee said the more she researched, the more she learned of how King handled the struggle by not using violence.
“I learned about the many different people who helped him,” Lee said. “He did it with non-violence. I just wanted to explain that. The non-violence brought more sacrifice than violence. That is what the Lord gave me.”
Cast members in the play will be: Dr. MLK- Pastor Erik Andrews; Rosa Parks-Mamie Hamilton; Joanne Robinson-Malinda McCorvey; Rev. John-Clea McClain; Bus Driver- Johnny Jackson; Policeman- Claude Dubose; Prosecuting attorney-William Stallworth; Defense attorney-Ronnie Duncan; Vivian Malone-Bessie Johnson; Judge-Susan Jones; Jesse Jackson-Candy Collins; Andrew Johns-Elaine Hall; and soloist-Tiquana Jackson.
