Where’s the beef?

The Escambia County Steer Show will be held on Thurs., March 6, at Perdido River Farms in Atmore. This is a new venue for the Escambia County Calf Show and offers the opportunity for participants to experience premium modern show facilities located on an actual working farm. The show will begin at 1 p.m., with the buyers dinner at 5 p.m. The chatter of the auctioneer will begin the sale at 6:30 p.m.

“This show and sale is the culmination of a project that began last summer for our show participants,” said Ken Kelley, county extension agent. “The 4-H’ers and FFA members have worked hard and sacrificed free time to produce a quality product. I have seen the calves and all of them have done a good job caring for their animals.”

Kelley said the show affords the young people an opportunity to show off their hard work, as well as giving the general public a chance to purchase some quality beef.

“And, hopefully, through the help of sponsors and premium buyers, make some money on their project,” Kelley said. “Most of the buyers at the premium sale will allow the calves to be resold at market price on that following Saturday, March 8, at the Brewton Stockyard.

“This is an opportunity to purchase a wonderful freezer calf,” he said. “These animals are heavily muscled and they will yield a higher percentage of usable beef than typical slaughter animals. Arrangements can be made to transport the calves to a processing facility. The show, the premium sale, and the resale will all be fun for the whole family. You may want to get with some friends and buy one of these quality animals for your freezer.”
