She gives tirelessly of her time and energy, and because of that dedication to her fellow humans, Lisa Thomas McMillan was chosen as one of two 2014 Brewton Chamber of Commerce “Citizen of the Year.”
Nominated by Spike Maxwell, McMillan, also known as “Carlisa,” manages and operates two entities, Carlisa and Drexel and Honeybees, both non-profit.
“What Lisa does is cook; what Lisa is about is feeding the hungry,” Maxwell said. “For many years, she has provided food for the public through venues such as Drexel and Honeybees – now located in the Student Center at Jefferson Davis College. Her meals have always been priced below market prices and are home-cooked. Her small profit is turned back into support for her ministry of feeding folks who cannot pay. Lisa regularly takes plates of fresh-cooked food to elderly and others who need it but cannot pay; also, she will not turn down a hungry college student who has no lunch money.”
Many may remember McMillan for her “walks” from Brewton to various locations in the U.S. and done to bring about hunger awareness.
“She stood for her cause by walking from Brewton to Montgomery for an audience with the governor to promote feeding the hungry; later, the same Lisa walked from Brewton to Washington, D.C., hoping to see the president of the United States,” Maxwell said. “She did not meet with the president, but much publicity was gained for her cause.
“Lisa Thomas McMillan is a humble, tireless servant to the needy; she is motivated by her calling from God and her charge to love her neighbors,” he said.
“Her service to the needy in our community is duly documented and deserving of the kind of recognition this award is meant to give.”
