TRM football schedule announced for 2014 season

It may have taken him a little longer than normal to complete his team’s football schedule, but T.R. Miller head coach Jamie Riggs has released T.R. Miller’s schedule for the upcoming 2014 season.
“I am glad to get 10 games and get a schedule,” Riggs said. “We changed the format this year in the Alabama High School Athletic Association. You could play a preseason game on the next-to-last Friday in August then have 10 games like we have been doing or if you wanted too you could play a non-region regular season game there. If you did that, you only would have nine other games to play, but you could have an open date somewhere. It just gave you a little scheduling flexibility.”
Riggs said the other issue he and others had this year was instead of being in an eight-team region, T.R. Miller is now in a seven-team region.
“So what that meant was we had to go out there and get another game and the options on that were there were not very many people that had that same date,” he said. “We just decided to have an open date and play a regular season game on that 22nd day of August. So I had to find four non-region games and that will be Andalusia (4A), Tallassee (5A), Atmore (5A) and W.S. Neal (4A) this year. So from that standpoint, I think it is good that we have an open date later on in the season and I think that can be of some benefit to you some.”
Riggs said he has four new teams on his schedule this year that he will play the next two years.
“We have Andalusia, Tallassee, Geneva and Hillcrest,” Riggs said. “Geneva and Hillcrest are the two new teams in our region. So that is good. Certainly this schedule will be very challenging early. By the time you play Andalusia, Tallassee who is 5A and a good 5A team, and Bayside Academy, you will probably have some idea of where your team stands. So we will need to be good early.”
The annual Battle of Murder Creek game between T.R. Miller and W.S. Neal this season and next will be played as the last game of the season.
“We will play W.S. Neal, who is now not in our region, so we will now play them in the 10th game and move Escambia County to our sixth game,” Riggs said. “Actually, W.S. Neal is the 11th game now because we have 11 dates to play 10 games. We will now play Escambia County in the midseason. We have missed out on Andalusia the past few seasons because they chose to play Opp during the midseason instead of us. So this time we were able to get them August 22. We were looking for a game on the August 29 date and just so happen, I came up on Tallassee. Looking at south Alabama, we really could just not find anybody else. I am really fortunate to get them. I know it is a couple of hours away, but I really felt fortunate to get somebody that close. When it came down to it, people already had games. Some times people will cancel on you before you can get them to commit so it can be a challenging thing at times to get a schedule.”
