Well, hello Spring.

Tuesday’s sunshine was a far cry from the weekend’s nasty weather that damaged area schools and businesses.

Business owners, as well as staff at T.R. Miller High School, said areas of their facilities were flooded when three inches of rain fell over the weekend. On Sunday, weather reports recorded 2.78 inches of rainfall. Thankfully, Brewton and its surrounding communities weathered the storm with minimal damage.

In Atmore, it was a different story. The Atmore Advance reported that the storm, which passed through the south end of town, heavily damaged Burke’s Outlet and caused some damage at surrounding buildings. While a tornado warning was in effect at the time, a National Weather Service survey team determined Monday that the damage was not caused by a twister. According to the NWS, the team found evidence consistent with downburst straight-line winds, with the strongest winds blowing from the south-southwest to north-northeast. NWS said wind speeds were estimated to range from 86 to 110 mph.

This week, Brewton residents will be greeted not only with the first day of spring on Thursday, but also a string of warm weather days.

Forecasters are calling for daily highs in the upper 70s through Saturday. Spring Break week will start off cool with daytime highs in the upper 60s. By Thursday, however, forecasts show a much warmer weekend when highs rise back to the 70s.
