Brewton area children have a chance to show off their cycling skills — and win a free bicycle — at the Brewton Police Department’s second annual bike rodeo Saturday.

Police Chief Monte McGougin said the event is a chance to get children accustomed to seeing police officers in a positive light.

“We want to relay to kids and parents that we are here for the community,” he said.

BPD officers Shane Brannock and Chris Byrd pose with the bounty for this week’s bike rodeo. Four lucky children – two boys, two girls – will win these bicycles.

“We’re fathers, we’re mothers; we care about the community.”

The bike rodeo will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the John L. Fisher Community Center (the old Brewton Middle School) on Liles Boulevard.

After some lessons in bike safety, a bicycle obstacle course, and two lucky boys and two lucky girls will win a bicycle.

There will also be a DJ, refreshments and a bounce house for younger children.
