Brewton native Ronnie Cottrell has recently been named as the new head football coach at Chickasaw High School.
Cottrell, who most recently coached in Florida at Godby, has served as an assistant football coach at Alabama and Florida along with serving as a head high school coach at Kinston, Flomaton, W.S. Neal, Carroll-Ozark, and Alma Bryant.
Cottrell coached at Kinston from 1983-84 and went 7-14.
Cottrell then went to Flomaton from 1985-87 and went 29-7.
In 1988, Cottrell coached at W.S. Neal and went 6-5.
In 2005-06, he coached at Carroll and went 9-12 before going to Alma Bryant from 2008-09 and went 7-13.
“I’m very excited about being the coach at Chickasaw,” Cottrell told AL.com. “Mr. (Brent) Ward (principal) has been very consistent and aggressive with me as far as this job is concerned and I appreciate that.
“We still own a house in Mobile. This is home for us. We’re excited about being back and excited about having the opportunity to start a program from really the beginning.
“There is a lot to do, but I’m ready for the challenge.”
Cottrell, 55, will lead the Chieftains of Chickasaw in their first varsity game at the school’s home field, Dotson Park, Aug. 22 against Flomaton. They will be members of Class 1A, Region 1.
Cottrell spent the last four years at Godby High in Tallahassee, Fla., leading the team to a 38-13 overall record and the state Class 4A title in 2012.
