Thursday’s Brewton Babe Ruth games saw LSU take down league-leading South Carolina in the first game of the night and Arkansas and Arizona State pitchers combine for 32 strikeouts in the nightcap.
In game one, LSU took down South Carolina 7-6 to improve to 5-4 while the Gamecocks fell to 6-2-1. The loss was South Carolina’s first since the second game of the season.
In the second game, a pitching duel, Arkansas edged Arizona State 3-1 in extra innings.
In the second game, Arizona State pitchers combined for 17 strikeouts while Arkansas’ combined for 15.
Arkansas’ Jo Jo Booker struck out 14 in seven innings to get the win while Arizona State’s Russell Smith struck out 16 in seven innings and took the no decision.

LSU 7, South Carolina 6
Leading LSU 6-5 after three innings, South Carolina committed three errors in the top of the fourth to allow LSU to take a 7-6 lead and failed to score in the final inning due to time limit to take the one-run loss.
Both teams scored four runs each in the first inning and South Carolina added two more in the second to grab a 6-4 lead. From there, LSU scored three unanswered to get the win.
Brandon Moye earned the win on the mound for LSU in relief of starter Lane Chavers. Chavers went 1 2/3 innings and allowed six hits, six runs, walked two and struck out three. Moye went the next 1 1/3 innings and allowed one hit, no runs, walked one and struck out three. Stokes Jennings went the final inning to earn the save. Jennings allowed one walk and struck out one.
At the plate for LSU, Kristian Taylor had a single while Moye and Clark both had one RBI each. Jennings added a single and two RBIs while Colton Young had a single and two RBIs.
For South Carolina, Jacobey Hawthorne took the loss in relief of starter Caleb Winton. Winton went three innings and allowed three hits, five runs, walked six and struck out two.
Hawthorne went one inning and allowed no hits, two runs, no walks and struck out one.
South Carolina made six errors in the loss and left seven on base while LSU made three errors and left six on base.

Arkansas 3, Arizona State 1 (eight innings)
In a game that saw 32 combined strikeouts—30 combined in seven innings by starters Jo Jo Booker and Russell Smith and two in extra innings—the Arkansas Razorbacks edged out Arizona State 3-1.
Booker earned the win on the mound for Arkansas as he went seven innings and allowed two hits, one run, two walks, struck out 14 and hit two batters. Drew Williamson went the final inning and struck out one for the save.
Russell Smith took the no decision for Arizona State while Andrew Etheridge took the loss. Smith went seven innings and allowed two hits, one run, walked three, struck out 16 and hit one batter.
Etheridge went one inning and allowed one hit, two runs, and struck out one.
Arkansas led 1-0 after one inning before Arizona State tied the game at 1-all in the fourth inning.
Arizona State had their chance to win the game in regulation after a leadoff double by Etheridge. Etheridge advanced to third on a wild pitch, but with one out, got caught in a rundown on a sacrifice bunt by Matt Thomas and would get out.
In the extra frame—with one out and a runner on second due to international tiebreaker rules—Trentez Johnson singled and scored Caleb Kaylor. Johnson would later score on an Arizona State error to give Arkansas the 3-1 lead and eventually the win.
For Arkansas at the plate, Williamson, Booker and Johnson all had singles with Booker and Johnson having one RBI each.
For Arizona State, Jordan Williams and Etheridge both had a double each.
The win clinched the three-game series for Arkansas.

Tuesday:
In Tuesday’s Babe Ruth games, South Carolina defeated LSU 7-6 while Arkansas doubled up Arizona State 8-4.
With the win for South Carolina, the Gamecocks remained in first place and improved to 6-1-1 this season while taking the three-game series from LSU. The Tigers fell to 4-4.
Arkansas moved to 3-5 this season while Arizona State fell to 2-5-1. The win for Arkansas evened their three-game series at 1-1 for the week.

South Carolina 7, LSU 6
South Carolina held off a furious late-inning rally for LSU to get a one-run win by a score of 7-6.
Caleb Winton came on in relief to induce the final two outs, including getting a bases-loaded popup to end the game and secure the win for USC.
With the Gamecocks leading 7-3 going into the final frame, LSU drew a walk, got consecutive hits from Tyler Baxter and Hayden Winchester and an infield error to cut the deficit to 7-6. Winton came on in relief of starter Jacobey Hawthorne and got a pop fly out for the second out of the inning. After a couple of walks loaded the bases again, the game ended when second baseman Daniel Reed made a sterling catch in shallow right field.
South Carolina led 3-2 after an inning, then extended its lead to 7-3 by the fourth before LSU mounted its comeback bid.
Hawthorne got the win on the mound despite giving up seven hits and striking out four. He was aided offensively by Joshua Winton and Derrick Barton, who each had three hits. Barton had two singles and a double, with two RBI, while Joshua Winton had three singles, chasing home three runs. Hawthorne, Preston Townson and Reed also contributed singles.
For LSU, Stokes Jennings took the hard-luck loss on the mound. Jennings pitched well, going the distance and striking out eight.
O’Neil White led LSU at the plate with two singles, while Conner Huskey, Brandon Moye, Christian Taylor, Baxter and Winchester all got singles.

Arkansas 8, Arizona State 4
A six-run third inning for Arkansas helped them claim an 8-4 win over the Arizona State Sun Devils Tuesday.
For Arkansas, Drew Williamson and Weston Riddle teamed up on the mound for the pitching win. The duo combined to go five innings, allowed seven hits, four runs, two earned, walked five and hit one.
At the plate, Williamson was 1-for-3 with two RBIs, Matt Hutchins was 2-for-2 and Hunter Revel was 2-for-3 with a double. Garrett Salter went 1-for-3 while Austin Rowell was 1-for-2 with one RBI. Trentez Johnson and Taylor Ragan added one hit each.
For Arizona State, Micah Flores was 2-for-3 with one RBI while Andrew Etheridge was 1-for-2 with a double. Matt Smith went 2-for-2 with a double and Jason Konsler was 2-for-2 with one RBI.
Micah Flores and Etheridge pitched in the loss going 4 2/3 innings and allowed nine hits, eight runs, four earned, walked two and struck out two.
