Parents will see a bit of a break in their back-to-school shopping costs in August.

The Brewton City Council voted Monday to participate in the state’s annual sales tax holiday. This year’s event will be held from 12:01 a.m. on Aug. 1 to midnight on Aug. 3.

This is the eighth year the state has held the sales tax holiday giving shoppers the opportunity to purchase certain school supplies, computers, and clothing free of state sales or use tax. In the City of Brewton, that means a discount of 8 percent – or 4 percent state sales tax and 4 percent city sales tax. The county commission has not voted to participate in this year’s event.

Examples of included items are clothing items priced at $100 or less per item; computers and computer supplies; school supplies, including school art supplies and instructional material, with a sales price of $50 or less; and books priced at $30 or less.

The city council’s vote was unanimous.

Council members also approved an ordinance that requires campers to obtain a permit from the city fire department before lighting their fire. Juveniles must be accompanied by someone 21 or older before getting permit, the resolution stated.

The permit’s intent is to allow the fire department to know who is camping on city property.

In other business, the council:

• signed paperwork to reflect the bank change on a $1.7 million line of emergency credit and a $3 million letter of credit from Banktrust to Trustmark;

• approved a contract for services for the J.L. Fisher Center and finalized another for the Brewton Outreach Center;

• voted to close Martin Luther King Jr. Street on June 14 for a community block party from noon until 6 p.m.;

• heard a financial request from the Greater Brewton Area Adult

• moved the July 7 council meeting to July 14.
