A Brewton man is charged with allegedly trying to burn down his house with his five-member family inside.

Escambia County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Mike Lambert said Monday that the incident occurred at the Nelson Road home of Charles Brandon Nelson.

“From what we have determined, the incident stemmed from a domestic on May 30 at approximately 12:30 p.m.,” Lambert said. “According to statements, the victims – which ranged in age from juvenile to adults – were asleep inside the home.

“Mr. Nelson allegedly got a gas can then poured cooking oil all over the kitchen and then followed it with gas,” he said. “One victim awoke to the smell and called 911.”

Lambert said prior to deputies’ arrival, Nelson allegedly threatened to “shoot them and all who come here.” Nelson also allegedly fired shots before fleeing to a home on Wolf Log Road, where he was taken into custody without incident later that morning.

Nelson is charged with attempted arson I and domestic violence/reckless endangerment III.

“This case will be presented to the grand jury, and additional charges could be pending,” Lambert said.

Nelson was later released on a $10,000 bond.
