This past Saturday while the annual Blueberry Festival was winding down, I had the privilege of covering the adult leadership class from this year’s Blueberry Regatta.
A total of seven teams took on the challenge of building a boat out of cardboard and duct tape.
Not only were they challenged with building a boat out of the two products, but also they were given the task of having two people get the boat from O’Bannon Park to Jennings Park down Burnt Corn Creek.
Before the event, I messaged Connie Baggett and asked her where would be the best place to get the best pictures. Her reply was at O’Bannon where the boats would be put in the water and the race would begin. Boy
was she right when she said those would make for some good pictures.
As the race began, some sank while some flipped.
Some, after a rough start, got the hang of how their boat would handle and went on down the creek with no problem.
As the boats got out of sight, I started the walk to Jennings Park. And thanks to a ride from leadership class representative Lauren Yoder, we made it just in time to watch the boats float on in to
the sandbar. Well, some of them floated in. Others were pushed in while some came in pieces.
All in all, it made for a great first event and fundraiser and is something I hope we might can see at future Blueberry Festivals.
While the event came and went, and my long list of Saturday events continued on, I would later get to thinking about the race. The thoughts led to a short message that I delivered to the youth at our church –Grace Covenant International Church in Pollard –Tuesday night during our youth service.
While some boats made the trip down the creek unscathed, others were not so blessed. As mentioned earlier, some boats sank and some boats ripped apart.
But while this happened, everyone finished the race…some in the boats, while some had no boat left to
get in and only drag across the finish line.
Life is a race. We all go through different obstacles.
But it is important that we finish the race. If you fall down, get back up. If your boat
starts to sink or rip apart, just keep swimming.
Like the old saying says, when life throws you lemons, just catch them and make yourselves some lemonade.
Until we meet again here, or out in the world of sports, or just out somewhere in the world, God bless.
