Brewton’s 8U and 10U softball teams claim championships

Brewton’s 10U all-star softball team won their district championship Saturday in Andalusia with a 16-2 win over East Brewton.
Brewton opened play Thursday with a 10-6 win over Andalusia. On Friday, Brewton won 17-7 over Atmore.
In Saturday’s semifinal game, Brewton took down Tri County 9-8 to advance to the championship game where they cruised over East Brewton by 14 runs to win the championship.
Thursday night game one:
Brewton 10. Andalusia 6
Courtland Salter pitched a complete game and struck out 13 to help Brewton begin with a win Thursday against Andalusia by a score of 10-6. Salter gave up three hits and five walks in the win.
Brewton scored one in the first inning when Salter knocked in Chloe Smith who had reached on a single. The score remained 1-0 until the top of the fourth when Rebecca Ann Moore singled to knock in Salter and Ansley Till.
Brewton scored four more runs in the fifth inning when Smith, Jennings Ruzic, and Till had singles in that inning.
In the bottom of the fifth, Andalusia picked up five runs to tighten the score at 7-5. Brewton scored three runs in the sixth inning to extend the lead.
A Salter double was the big hit in the inning. In the bottom of the sixth, Andalusia was held to one run. Salter had three hits, Smith had two hits while Ruzic, Till, Moore, and Caroline Williamson had one hit each for Brewton.
Friday morning game two: Brewton 17, Atmore 7
In their second game of the tournament, Brewton 10-run ruled Atmore 17-7.
Makenzie Thomas struck out the first six batters she faced and finished with nine strikeouts over four innings to help in the win. Smith pitched 2/3 of an inning and recorded two strikeouts.
In the bottom of the first, Brewton picked up six runs on six walks and a Till single. In the second inning, Brewton scored four runs on six walks and a Thomas single.
Atmore got on the board after scoring four runs in the top of the third.
In the bottom of the third, Brewton answered with three more runs to take a 13-4 lead. Brewton was aided by five walks and a Moore single.
Atmore scored three in the top of the fourth to cut the lead to 13-7, however, Brewton scored four in the bottom of the fourth to end the game by the 10-run rule.
Five walks and singles by Abby Terrell and Thomas contributed toward Brewton’s runs in the fourth inning.
Saturday morning game three: Brewton 9, Tri County 8 (semifinal game)
Strong defensive plays late in the game helped Brewton win a close one over Tri County Saturday by a score of 9-8.
In the top of the first inning, Tri County scored one to go up 1-0.
Brewton tied it up in the bottom of the first after Thomas singled, stole second and third, and then scored on a passed ball.
Tri County again scored one in the top of the second to go up 2-1. Brewton was held scoreless in the second inning and trailed heading to the third.
Tri County picked up three runs in the top of the third inning to go up 5-1.
Brewton answered with six runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 7-5 lead. Thomas, Smith, Ruzic, Salter, Kate Najor, and Macie Happolt all had base hits in the third inning for Brewton.
Tri County scored three runs in the fourth inning to take an 8-7 lead.
Salter led off with a single and later scored in the bottom of the fourth to even the score at 8-8.
In the top of the fifth, two nice defensive plays by third baseman Smith helped Brewton hold Tri County scoreless.
Emma Claire Hayes doubled to begin the Brewton fifth inning. Hayes scored on a single by Thomas to give Brewton a 9-8 lead heading to the last inning.
Good defense by Brewton kept Tri County off the board in the sixth inning and preserved the victory.
The leadoff batter in the sixth inning hit a deep fly ball to left field which was caught by Moore. Later in the inning, Tri County got the tying run to third base with one out. The batter hit a ground ball to the pitcher (Makenzie Thomas) and she threw the ball home and catcher Ansley Till blocked the plate and applied the tag for out number two.
Again, Tri County got the tying run to third base. A nice play by second baseman Kate Najor ended the inning and the game.
Thomas led Brewton at the plate with three hits, Smith, Ruzic, Salter, and Emma Claire Hayes had two hits, and Najor and Happolt had a hit each.
Salter and Thomas each pitched for Brewton in the win. They combined for eight strikeouts.
Saturday afternoon, game four: Brewton 16, EB 2 (championship game)
In the championship game against East Brewton, Brewton cruised to a 16-2 win to claim the championship.
In the game Saturday, in the top of the first inning, East Brewton pitcher Ashli Wyatt struck out each of the three batters she faced.
East Brewton took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first after singles by Ashli Wyatt, Madison White, and Kendall Carpenter.
Brewton scored one in the top of the second when Courtland Salter led off the inning with a double and later scored.
Brewton pitcher Courtland Salter held East Brewton scoreless in the bottom of the second.
In the top of the third inning, Brewton scored six runs on three walks and singles by Chloe Smith, Courtland Salter, Ansley Till, Kate Najor, and Macie Happolt. Brewton pitcher Makenzie Thomas held East Brewton scoreless in the bottom of the third. Each batter in the inning hit the ball to the pitcher and were thrown out at first.
Heading to the fourth inning, Brewton led 7-2. In the top of the fourth, Brewton plated nine runs on three walks and base hits by Jennings Ruzic, Courtland Salter, Ansley Till, Macie Happolt, and Makenzie Thomas. Jennings Ruzic, Courtland Salter, and Ansley Till each had two base hits in the fourth inning.
Brewton led 16-2 heading to the bottom of the fourth.
After Kendall Carpenter led off with a single, East Brewton was held scoreless and the game ended 16-2.
Courtland Salter had four hits for Brewton, Ansley Till and Macie Happolt had three hits, Jennings Ruzic had two hits, and Makenzie Thomas, Chloe Smith, and Kate Najor had one hit for Brewton.
Kendall Carpenter led East Brewton with two hits. Ashli Wyatt and Madison White had a hit each for East Brewton.
On the mound, Courtland Salter and Makenzie Thomas each pitched two innings for Brewton. Courtland Salter gave up two runs on three hits. She walked one and recorded two strikeouts. Makenzie Thomas gave up no runs on one hit. She gave up no walks and had one strikeout.
For East Brewton, Ashli Wyatt and Madison White pitched.
Brewton’s 8U team also won their district championship, but no other stats or game information from the team was known as of press time. Also, no information was known from Brewton’s 12U team.
