James T. (Jimmy) Sanborn, age 72, left this earthly world on June 28, 2014 at Providence Hospital in Mobile surrounded by his family.

He was born on July 17, 1941 in Revere, Mass.  He was preceded in death by his father Morris Sanborn, mother Irene McMillon, step father Bill McMillon, and sister Martha (Marty) Sanborn.

He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Sharon S. Sanborn; by his brother Brian Sanborn of Anniston; children: Beverly Sanborn Foster of Northport, AL; Nora Tate of Burlison, Tenn.; Tracey Sanborn of Pensacola, FL; Dee Dee M. Ward of Alabaster,  and Kylisha J. Mallard of Sharpsburg, Ga.; Sons-in-law: Matt Foster, Jeff Ward and Dexter Mallard; Grandchildren: Rachel Worthing, Jerry Wayne Philyaw, Beth Gallagher, Jordan and Marisol Foster; Patrick, Alex and Cristiana Joy Ward, and Zoey, Hayden and Hanna Mallard; and 3 great-grandchildren.

Following his interest in Justice and Law Enforcement, he obtained a BS from Troy State University, followed by a MS in Criminal Justice from Tennessee Christian University.  His 33-year career of serving his community began as a police officer in several small towns in southcentral Alabama, including Brewton Police Department.  The majority of his career was with the Alabama Department of Corrections, in Atmore, where he retired as a Leiutenant. He was a 32 degree member of Mobile Scottish Rite, as well as a member of Norris Lodge No. 301, Perdido Lodge No. 752, Monroeville York Rite Bodies, and ABBA Temple Shriners of Mobile.  He was an avid gun collector and restorer, enjoyed collecting patches and Americana Memorabilia, loved Western movies, and gardening. Most of all, Jimmy dearly loved his family and Church. He and Sharon had recently renewed their wedding vows.

Following his long time wishes, his remains were donated to the University of South Alabama to further medical science, research and education.

A memorial will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church on July 6 at 2 p.m. to celebrate his life.  In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to his beloved church, Trinity Episcopal at 203 S. Carney St, Atmore, AL 36502.

 

 

Craig Douglas Boyd, age 62, of Kirkland Road in Brewton, passed away Friday afternoon June 27, 2014 in a Pensacola hospital after a brief illness. He was a native of Pensacola and a long time resident of Brewton. Boyd was a Branch Manager of Dairy Fresh for 30-plus years and a Christian. He was a 1971 graduate of T.R. Miller High School.

He is survived by his mother, Audrey Douglas Boyd of Brewton; his wife, Sue Boyd of Brewton; one son, Lee (LaRae) Boyd of Brewton; one daughter, Angel Boyd of Brewton; one adopted daughter, Sharon Ard of Bogia, Fla.; two brothers, John (Johnnie Clyde) Boyd of Brewton and Kyle (Martha) Boyd of Ashville, NC; and two grandsons, Douglas Boyd and Hundley Boyd; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Leonidas Leslie Boyd Jr.; his paternal grandparents, Leonidas Leslie Boyd Sr. and Marietta Herron Boyd; and his maternal grandparents, John Hundley Douglas and Tera Blanch Douglas.
Visitation was held Sunday night, June 29, 2014 at Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home in Brewton.

Funeral services were scheduled for Monday June 30, 2014 at Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home with Rev. Lee Jernigan and Speaker Albert Dyess officiating.

Interment followed in Buffington Cemetery in Castleberry.

Cheryl Elaine Joyner, age 55, of Hideaway Lane Brewton, passed away Thursday morning June 12, 2014 in a Pensacola hospital after brief illness. She was a native and life long resident of Escambia County, Alabama. Joyner was a member of the East Brewton First Baptist Church and a 1977 Graduate of W.S. Neal High School.

She is survived by one sister, Debra Joyner (Rodney) Hawkins of Brewton; one nephew Ryan (Carrie) Hawkins of Jay; two great nieces, McKenzie Hawkins and Emily Burgess; one uncle, Bobby (Mildred) Brooks of East Brewton; and a number of cousins.

Graveside services were held June 14 at Fort Crawford Cemetery with Rev. Larry Watts officiating. Internment followed in Fort Crawford Cemetery with Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Hoe of Brewton directing.

Ethel Lee Morris Smith, age 93, of Douglas Avenue in Brewton, passed away Saturday morning June 28, 2014 in a Pensacola hospital after a brief illness. She was a native and life long resident of Brewton. Smith was a faithful follower of Jesus Christ since childhood, and was an active member of the North Brewton Baptist Church since 1959. She served as the church’s kitchen director for over 20 years, after having served as nursery director for almost a decade. Besides her loving devotion to the Lord and to her family, she was also employed at the Brewton Ribbon Mill from the mid 1940’s to the late 1960’s. Her generous hospitality and down home cooking were known throughout the community, as her door was always open to guest and her dinner table overflowed with delights.

She is survived by one son, Jerry Smith of Brewton; one daughter Marguerite (Billy) Shell of Brewton; one sister Ruth Covin of Pensacola; three grandchildren, Judson Shell, Dawn (Corwin) Matwichuk, and Dana (Jimmy) Johnson; three great-grandchildren, Own Johnson, Cole Matwichuk, and Luke Matwichuk.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence O. Smith, Sr.

Visitation will be held Wednesday July 2, 2014 from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the North Brewton Baptist Church in Brewton.
Funeral Services are scheduled for Wednesday afternoon July 2, 2014 at 1 p.m.. at the North Brewton Baptist Church with Rev. Michael King officiating. Interment will follow in Zion Hill Cemetery Brewton, Alabama with Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Brewton directing.

Pallbearers will be Don Easter, Larry Hill, Jimmy Johnson, Bill Lawing, Eddie Nall and Byron Nall.

Vivian Elaine Scroggins McCall, age 57 of, McGougin Road in Brewton, passed away Tuesday, June 24, 2014 at her residence after a brief illness. She was a native and life long resident of Brewton. McCall was a member of the Dogwood Hills Assembly of God Church and a Homemaker.

She is survived by one son, Eddie McCall, Jr. of Brewton; two daughters Audrey Vonciel Brown of Brewton and Jennifer E. McCall of Brewton; one brother Ed Scroggins of Brewton; two sisters, Elizabeth Pittman of Munson, and Nellie Faye Scroggins of Brewton; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial services were held Friday, June 27, 2014 at 3 p.m. at Dogwood Hills Assembly of God Church with Rev. Tommy Quick officiating and Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Brewton in charge of arrangements.

 

 

Sylvester “Moot” Herbert Jr., 67, passed away Tuesday, June 24 at a local hospital.

Herbert attended Booker T. Washington High School in Brewton and worked several jobs, later retiring from Container Corporation.

Herbert was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert Sr. and Brownie Grace of Brewton.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret “Big M” Herbert; four children, Michael (Roxann) Herbert of Mesa, Ariz., Jaqueline Herbert, Carolyn Herbert and Margaret (Anthony) Bullard, all of Brewton; two sisters, Alice Reed of Houston and Kate Lewis of Griffin, Ga.; 15 grandchildren, Keya Peterson, Ashley Herbert, Michael Herbert, Kesha Peterson, Anthony Herbert, Jaylon Herbert, Brittany Rush, Desiree’ Herbert, Olivia Herbert, Dante Herbert, Amanda Herbert, Michael Herbert, William Herbert, Courtney Bullard, and Anthony Calhoun; three great grandchildren, (his boss) Kamryn Todd, Jacob Herbert and Ja’Kalyn Herbert; four sisters-in-law, Virginia Nicholson, Jacquelin Hubbard, both of Brewton, Mary Lovelace of Detroit, and Clascile Broughton of Pensacola; two brothers-in-law, Edward Hubbard and Bernard Hubbard, both of Brewton; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
