An event that has become somewhat of a tradition in East Brewton is on tap again for next weekend — thanks to some dedicated boilers.
For the past several years, a group of members at the East Brewton United Methodist Church have boiled peanuts to offer for sale to the community. The sale of the peanuts helps fund mission projects, provide funding for special needs of the church and continue the mission of the church to reach out to others.
Bernie Raines, a member of the church and head peanut boiler, said getting the pots filled and boiling takes a good bit of time and the loss of a little sleep. For the 2013 event, Raines was on-site at the church and had pots ready to boil as early as 12:15 a.m. on the first day of the sale.
“Once you get the water boiling it takes four hours to boil some of these big pots,” Raines said. “It takes a while to get them right.”
Members gather as many as 750 pounds of green peanuts in preparation for the two-day sale. A group of dedicated pot watchers make sure the peanuts are cooked to perfection while the ladies of the church work to bag the peanuts for sale.
The sale will begin Friday, Aug. 29 at 8 a.m. and will continue on Saturday, Aug. 30 — until the peanuts are gone.
Peanuts, in a quart-sized bag — or about two pounds — are available for $4 per bag.
The church is located on Forrest Avenue in East Brewton across from city hall.
