W.S. Neal Elementary School administrators, teachers and students are mourning the loss of a second grade student believed to have drowned.

Chief Deputy Mike Lambert said emergency response personnel responded to a 911 call from a Travis Road home Sunday of an unresponsive 7-year-old girl.

EMTs immediately began life-saving measures on the child, identified as Felicity Cirota, who’d been pulled from the bathtub. Cirota was transported to D.W. McMillan Hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

Lambert said Cirota’s body was sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences to determine the cause of death.

W.S. Neal Principal Susan McKenzie said students were informed of Cirota’s death Monday morning.

“Felicity attended school here in the first and second grade, but had transferred around spring break to Excel,” McKenzie said. “During her time here, she was bubbly and outgoing.

“She re-enrolled here Wednesday and seemed to have really matured,” McKenzie said. “She seemed so grown up. It is quite a tragedy.”
