The T.R. Miller Tigers scored on nearly every offensive drive Friday night, as they won at Escambia County High School, 58-20.
The Tigers scored touchdowns on eight of their drives, and a field goal in another. TRM moved the ball down to the Devils’ 3-yard-line late in the game before letting the clock run out — that was the only drive in which the Tigers failed to score points.
“Offensively, we threw and caught the ball pretty good tonight and had some good success running the ball,” T.R. Miller coach Jamie Riggs said. “We gave up a number of big plays on defense, but some of that you have to credit to Atmore. They have some talented running backs and you can tell they have improved as a team.”
T.R. Miller led 14-6 after one quarter, and 38-12 at halftime.
The Tigers got off to a fast start, as McHenry Coleman scored a 60-yard touchdown run on the very first play of scrimmage. Hunter Brittain added the extra point, putting T.R. Miller up 7-0 just 20 seconds into the game.
Coleman added a 1-yard touchdown run with 7:37 left in the first quarter, and Derrick Murray scored on an 8-yard run with 11:52 left in the second quarter. The Tigers failed on the extra point attempt after Murray’s run, putting the score at 20-6.
Ahmaud Taylor had a 5-yard touchdown run with 8:27 left in the second quarter, and Jones Manning ran for the two-point conversion. Manning later connected with Trae Walker for a 40-yard touchdown reception with 3:09 left in the first half, and Brittain added the extra point.
Brittain connected on a 25-yard field goal as time expired in the second quarter.
The Tigers added three more touchdowns in the second half. Taylor ran for a 31-yard touchdown with 10:14 left in the third quarter, Coleman had a 1-yard run with 4:25 left in the third, and Brittain ran for a 3-yard score with 4:56 left in the game.
“We made too many mistakes tonight to beat a good team,” said ECHS coach Royce Young. “We’ve got to play with more focus and be more consistent.”
Junior running back Gaetyn Thames had two rushing touchdowns for the Blue Devils (0-6). He scored on a 55-yard run in the first quarter, and a 3-yard run in the second quarter.
The Blue Devils’ other touchdown came in the third quarter, when ECHS converted on a fourth-and-4 from the Miller 19-yard-line. On the play, quarterback Marquis Brooks connected with Devante Dailey for a 19-yard touchdown reception.
Miller will return home Friday night to host Opp in a region game.
