Still nursing injuries to key players, and struggling through a sluggish first half offensively, T.R. Miller’s defense came to the rescue, rose to the occasion and pitched a 17-0 shutout against a physical Geneva team Friday night.
The Tiger defense, which was the victim of several big plays in a loss to Opp a week ago, was staunch and steadfast at Geneva.
With Kyle Davis anchoring the defensive charge, the Tigers yielded the Panthers a paltry 86 total yards (41 rushing, 45 through the air) and 3 first downs.
With the defense holding the hosts at bay on their Homecoming night, the T.R. Miller offense came to life in the final half. Having gained just 26 yards on the ground in the first 24 minutes the Tigers ended the night with 141.
Senior quarterback Jones Manning added 131 through the air on 9-of-13 passes.
“I am real proud of the way our defense controlled the line of scrimmage,” said Tiger coach Jamie Riggs. “They really stepped it up tonight and got it done.
“Geneva runs a pretty diverse offense and we handled them pretty well. It was a very good win for us.”
Derrick Murray scored on a 1-yard run with 9:59 left on the half, before Hunter Brittain boomed a 36-yard field goal to close out the half with a 10-0 lead.
Ahmaud Taylor, who led all rushers with 105 yards on 22 grueling carries, finally put the final nail in the coffin with a 13-yard scoring run with 5:47 to go in the game.
