Geoffrey P. Painter
Grand Bay

Geoffrey P. Painter, 49, passed away Wed., Oct. 8, 2014.
A resident of Grand Bay, Painter was employed at Ingals Shipyard in Pascagoula, Miss., as a marine engineer. Painter graduated from T.R. Miller High School and attended Jefferson Davis Junior College in Brewton.
He graduated from the University of South Alabama in Mobile in 1989 as a mechanical engineer.
Painter is survived by his father, George Painter; two sisters, Harriet Melissa Painter Lincoln and Leah Helen Painter, both of Pensacola, Fla.
A memorial service will be held at Saint Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Brewton at 1 p.m. on Sun., Oct. 19. A visitation will be held at Saint Stephen’s Parish Hall from 11 a.m. until 12:45 p.m.

Nancy Cathern Bates
Brewton

Nancy Cathern Bates, 81, of Brooks Boulevard in Brewton, passed away last Monday night in a Brewton nursing facility after a brief illness.
She was a native and long time resident of Pawpacket, R.I., a former resident of Mobile, before moving to Brewton, in 1957. Bates attended the Zion Hill Baptist Church.
She was a homemaker, and a former seamstress at Judy Bond and Shelltex.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, O.C. Bates of Brewton; two daughters, Shelia Fountain of Brewton and Cindy Huff of Brewton; one sister, Irene Norstead of R.I.; and three grandchildren, Jessica Fountain, Leah Herrington, and Breann Huff.
Visitation was held Thurs. afternoon, Oct. 9, from 1 until 2 p.m. at Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home in Brewton.
Funeral services were scheduled for Thurs. afternoon Oct. 9, at 2 p.m. at Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home with Rev. Bryan Garrett officiating.
Interment followed in Green Acres Cemetery in Brewton, with Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Brewton.

Dr. Henry Heine Payne, Jr
Brewton

Dr. Henry Heine Payne, Jr, 79, passed away peacefully on Fri., Oct. 10, 2014.
Henry was born in May 1935 in Montgomery, to Henry Heine Payne, Sr. and Myrtise Owens Payne.
He grew up in Brewton, then moved to Columbus, Ga., and attended Columbus High School where he was inducted into the Honor Society.
His parents later moved back to Brewton, which he called home. He went to Vanderbilt University, and then became a graduate of Tulane University, Medical School.
After completing his Internship and Residency at Duval Medical in Jacksonville, Fla.; he was installed as a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologist. He served in the American Army as a Doctor and was shipped to the American Hospital in Tehran, Iran from 1962-63.
Interestingly enough, he treated Edward R. Murrow (CBS) and Robert Joffrey (Joffrey Ballet), as well as many others, while in Tehran. Henry moved to Pensacola in 1967 and began practicing obstetrics and gynecology with Douglas, Patton and McMahon with an affiliation to Baptist Hospital.
He later began his own practice Payne, Pyle, and Bruckman and was instrumental in bringing many physicians of many fields to Baptist Hospital and Pensacola.
In 1979, he served as Chief of Staff at Baptist Hospital and soon after redirected his specialty of practice from obstetrics and gynecology to Infertility. During this time he was Director and Chairman of the Board of Directors for Risk Management at Baptist Hospital.
Henry later retired but came out of retirement to work in a non-surgical capacity at the Medical Center and West Florida Hospital, to eventually retire again.
Henry H Payne, Jr. MD practiced for more than 30 years delivering compassion and excellent care to many women in Pensacola helping to bring so many infants safely into this world.
He was a long standing member of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the American Medical Association, American College of Infertility, and Escambia Medical Society. At Vanderbilt he was a Sigma Alfa Epsilon and at Tulane University a Phi Chi.
Locally he was a member of the Pensacola Yacht Club, Tiger Bay Club, Pensacola Country Club, Revelers of Ariola, Mayoki Indians, and Wine-Os. He loved sailing, scuba diving, hunting, fishing, boating, photography, traveling and teaching, as well as being an avid reader. He appreciated and enjoyed good food, friends, colleagues and family.
Henry is survived by his wife Monette (Kelly) Payne, children: David Owen Payne (Lisa Moore Payne), Lisa Payne Altamirano (Victor Altamirano) and Nicole Payne; stepchildren: Chris Kelly (Sharyn Kelly) and Shannon Kelly; grandchildren: Julia, Olivia, Victor and Shannon; step grandchildren: Asher (wife Grace), Hannah, Annie and Eliza.
A memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church on Thurs., Oct.16, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. and a reception and celebration of life to be held at the Pensacola Yacht Club immediately following the memorial service.
In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to Baptist Hospital Foundation, Covenant Hospice, or your favorite charity.

Stephen Edward Ross
Century, Fla.

Stephen Edward Ross, 56 of Century, Fla., passed away on Thurs., Oct. 9, 2014 at Jay Hospital.
Ross was a born in Atmore, but had been a lifetime member of the Flomaton and Century communities where he worked for the Town of Century as the Water Waste/Water Superintendent.
Ross was a member of Little Escambia Baptist Church and is preceded in death by his parents, Edward A. and Jean Boutwell Ross.
He is survived by his wife, DeAnna Parker Ross of Century, Fla.; sons, Parker (Tara) Ross of Auburn, Brian Ross of Century, Fla., Jesse Ross of Birmingham; sisters, Sheila (Scott) Emmons of Flomaton, Debbie (Roger) Hayes of Jay, Fla., Robin (Scott) Feutz of San Diego, Calif.; brother, Robert Tims of Century, Fla., and second mom, Mae Carter of Century, Fla.
Visitation was held on Sat., Oct. 11, 2014 at Little Escambia Baptist Church from 5 until 8 p.m.
Funeral services were held on Sun., Oct. 12, 2014 at Little Escambia Baptist Church at 2 p.m. with Rev. Doug Hogg officiating. Interment followed in Rock Cemetery, Flomaton.
Pallbearers were Justin Emmons, Robert Tims, Sedrick Lowry, Joe Brown, Billy Watson, Larry Murphy, Bobby Simpson, and Mike Brown.

Paul Martin Upton
Century, Fla.

Paul Martin Upton, 26, of Century, Fla., passed away suddenly on Sun., Oct. 5, 2014 at Jay Hospital after a tragic accident.
Upton was a native of Milton, Fla., and a long time resident of the Century community where he was a member and usher of Pilgrim’s Lodge Baptist Church in Century.
He is survived by his mother and step-father, Sandra (Frank) Rich of Pensacola, Fla.; his father and step-mother, Marty (Sharabeth) Upton of Texas; maternal grandmother, Kate Bondurant of Century, Fla.; step-grandmother, Beth Rich of Pensacola, Fla.; brother, John Curtis (Dara) Upton; step-brother, Chris Rich; nieces, Maria Sears Upton and Asa Sharrif of Orlando, Fla.; uncle John G. Upton of Farmers Branch, Texas; and numerous relatives and friends.
Visitation was held on Thurs., Oct.9, at the Flomaton Funeral Home Chapel from 6 until 8 p.m.
Funeral services were held on Fri., Oct. 10, at 10 a.m. at the Flomaton Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Cary Gilbert and Rev. Robert Barrow officiating.
Interment followed in Pollard Cemetery.
