Georgia Pacific has announced a new $24 million project that mean new machinery for its pulp process.
The project got an added economic boost Monday by the Brewton city council after members approved tax abatements for the company.
Georgia-Pacific is one of the world’s leading makers of tissue, pulp, paper, packaging, building products and related chemicals. It’s Brewton mill employs approximately 450 people.
“This new project will allow us to recover our fiber and return it to the system, thus increasing the efficiency of our operations,” said Suzanne Anderson, GP spokesperson.
Under the city’s agreement, GP’s non-education sales tax on the purchased equipment and the company’s non-education ad valorem taxes for 10 years on the purchased equipment will be abated.
This project is separate from the $375 million energy improvement project currently under way in Brewton. That project aims to modernize and streamline the current mix of equipment in the mill’s recovery boiler system, which will contribute to more efficient processes and operations.
