Brewton City Schools rounded out the top 20 of “best public school systems in the state” as ranked by Niche.com.
The site stated it seeks to “make choosing a neighborhood, college, or K-12 school a more transparent process” by “providing reviews and insight from everyday experts,” and that it recently set out to discover which Alabama public schools districts are the best of the best.
Schools were graded on academics, health and safety, student culture and diversity, survey responses, teachers, resources and facilities, extracurricular activities and sports and fitness. Academics were weighted at 50 percent of the total score.
The top five systems chosen were city systems in Homewood, Mountain Brook, Hoover, Auburn and Vestavia Hills.
Brewton, the smallest system in the top 20 ranking, earned an “A” in student culture and diversity; a “B+” in administration and policies and educational outcomes; “B” in academics, extracurricular activities; a “B-“ in sports and fitness and teachers; and a “C+” in health and safety.
“For us to be among so many other systems from some of the larger areas in Alabama is amazing,” BCS superintendent Lynn Smith said. “Our students and staff make the Brewton City School System what it is, and we are proud to have such a dedicated community that supports education.”
