Hattie Mae Cordell
Brewton

Hattie Mae Cordell was born February 5, 1927, in Brewton, to the union of the late Reverend James Henry Lovelace Sr. and Jessie Floyd Lovelace.
She was the oldest of 11 siblings, six of which preceded her in death.
At an early age she accepted Christ at the First Shady Grove Baptist Church and later joined the Second Shady Grove Baptist Church where she was a faithful member until her death.
She received her education at the Southern Normal School in Brewton. She attended the Ed Reid State Technical College in Evergreen, where she earned credentials as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). She worked in several hospitals and nursing homes as a LPN.
She also worked at the Fountain State Prison in Atmore for more than 20 years and retired as a LPN.
She was joined in holy matrimony to Luke Cordell, who preceded her in death. She was a faithful member of Snowden Chapter No. 846 Order of the Eastern Star.
She was also a member of the Heroines of Jericho.
To know her was to love her. She was a kind, friendly and loving person. She would give you the shirt off her back; though you might have to hear it over and over again, but that was Hattie. She would love you and give freely, but she would talk about it forever.
If she forgot your name you suddenly became “Dat Girl.” And if she noticed you were a little larger than the last time she saw you, she might say something like, “You sho’ is fat.” She would not be trying to insult you; she was just being her natural self. With Hattie, it was what you see is what you got.
She was a resident of the Santa Rosa Health and Rehabilitation Center for more than five years. All the employees knew and loved her and she probably knew their schedules better than they did.
She enjoyed having company. Everyone knew when her family came by. She was comical sometimes because you never knew what she was going to say. You would just have to brace yourself.
Cordell has gone on to glory and leaves to mourn and cherish her memories, four brothers, James Henry (Ruby) Lovelace Jr. of Jacksonville, Fla., Willie (Andrea) Lovelace of Pensacola, Fla., Berl Lee (Darlene) Lovelace Sr. of Ridgely, Md., and Earnest (Robin) Lovelace of Detroit; a sister-in-law, Mary Lovelace of Detroit; one aunt, Arvie (R.V.) Lovelace of Prichard; a devoted nephew, Junious (Dianne) James Jr. of Pensacola, Fla. and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
