Downtown Brewton will soon get a facelift in the form of a new boardwalk.
Monday, city council members approved a nearly $141,000 bid with Creamer Dozier Services of Brewton for the work.
Russell Holland with DMD Engineers said the federally grant-funded project requires a 20 percent match from the city.
“The project will take down the wooden structures behind the downtown businesses and replace it with a wood frame, composite decking and aluminum hand rails,” Holland said. “It should last 30 years or more and look great once it’s done.”
The current structures have been in place for 20 years, and Holland said represents a safety hazard.
“Some portions of it are actually shutdown right now,” he said.
The final contract requires state department of transportation approval, and once work begins, the company will have 45 days to complete the project.
“I expect work to go very quickly,” Holland said. “It’s a pretty simple process.”
In other business, the council:
• through a mayoral appointment, placed Lou Najor on the flood variance board;
• appointed Robert Hardy to the city housing board; and,
• approved a number of resolutions pertaining to maintenance and compliance for Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs land and water grants.
