Andalusia had the tying run on second, but couldn’t push him around as the Bulldogs fell to T.R. Miller 8-7 Monday in the first day of Opp’s Butch Youman’s Spring Break tournament.
Miller went out front 2-0 in the top of the first when Hunter Brittain and Chris Jones came around to score.
Riley Graham lead off the bottom of the first with a double, but was thrown out trying to score on a ball hit by Brayden Burkhardt.
The Tigers got a led off single from Tripp Floyd, but Todd Wright and Burkhardt teamed up for a double play to neutralize the Tigers’ threat.
Taylor Griffin and Ashton Elmore reached base in the bottom of the second, and Graham drove both in with a two-out single to the tie the game at, 2-2.
In the top of the third, Miller bounced back out front after an error and a two-out single from Tim McDonald gave the Tigers a 5-2 advantage.
Burkhardt reached after being hit by a pitch, and then came around to score on a passed ball.
Miller extended its lead in the top of the fourth when Drew Williamson ripped a two-run double that scored Garrett Salter and Jones Manning. Brittain drove in Williamson with a one-out single to give the Tigers an 8-3 lead.
Following the run, Wright replaced Elmore on the mound for the Bulldogs.
In the bottom of the fifth, Graham scored from third when Burkhardt was caught in a pickle between first and second.
The Bulldogs continued to chip away at the lead in the bottom of the sixth.
After a strikeout to start the inning, three straight singles pushed across a run for the Bulldogs. Chandler Jones drove in Peyton Garner for a score of 8-5, and Wright cut the lead to 8-6 with a single that drove in Griffin.
With two outs and the bases loaded, Burkhardt was called out on a close play at first that put an end to the Bulldogs’ threat.
Will Jones nearly homered to start the bottom of the seventh, but settled for a double. Griffin then drove in Will Jones from second with a single, and moved up to second on the throw home.
Chandler Jones appeared to tie the game up with a hit down the line, but it was called foul. Jones then struck out for the final out of the game.
“It seemed like this was our season defined in one game,” Bulldogs’ head coach Tyler Dent said. “We started slow, and made some costly errors early on that hurt us. Then we competed hard for the last five innings. I was proud of the way we competed. This is a really good group of kids. They come in and go to work every day. They are a fun group to work with.”
TRM moved to 15-1 overall with the win. The win was TRM’s 13th straight win.
