Needing to win two of their three games with Satsuma Thursday and Friday to make the playoffs as class 4A’s area runner-up, W.S. Neal’s baseball team got off to a good start Thursday at home as they picked up a 6-3 win. The win was WSN’s fifth straight and improved the Eagles to 12-8 overall this season.
In the game Thursday, WSN struck for two runs in the first inning and four in the second inning to build an early 6-0 lead.
WSN would not score again the rest of the game as the Gators scored one run in the fifth inning and two in the seventh. Satsuma led nine runners on base in the loss and made four errors.
At the plate for the Eagles of East Brewton, Derrick Barton and Jacobey Hawthorne led offensively. Both Barton and Hawthorne had a double and a single each and one RBI.
Miles Powell had a single and one RBI while Jared Cooper had two singles.
On the mound, Colton Morris got the start and the win as he went 4 2/3 innings and allowed three hits, one run, walked six, struck out five and hit two batters.
Cooper went the next 1 1/3 innings and struck out one batter while allowing no runs and no hits.
Lane Chavers pitched the top of the seventh inning and failed to get an out as he allowed two runs on two hits and walked one batter.
Dalton Shell got the last three outs of the game as he walked one and struck out one.
WSN was scheduled to travel to Satsuma Friday for the second and third games of the area doubleheader. With a win, WSN would clinch the runner-up spot and make the playoffs. If Satsuma won both games, they would be the area runner-up.
If WSN makes the playoffs, they would travel to Headland for round one of the AHSAA state playoffs.
