Headland sweeps WSN baseball in playoffs

Facing off against No. 7 Headland Saturday in the AHSAA class 4A state baseball playoffs, the W.S. Neal Eagles were swept to see their season come to an end.
The Eagles of East Brewton lost game one 9-1 and game two 9-7. The two losses finished WSN’s season with a 13-11 record.

Game one: Headland 9, WSN 1
Headland raced out to a 9-0 lead over WSN through five innings and held WSN to one run to take a 9-1 win in game one Saturday.
WSN had six hits in the loss with Miles Powell leading the way with a triple.
Lane Chavers, Jared Cooper, Dakota Graces, Malcolm Hawthorne and Dalton Shell all had one hit each in the loss.
On the mound, Colton Morris, Chavers and Matt Hutchins all pitched with Morris taking the loss.
Morris went two innings and allowed six hits, five runs, four earned, walked one, struck out two and hit one batter.
Chavers went 2 2/3 innings and allowed four hits, two earned runs, walked none, and struck out one.
Hutchins went the final 1 1/3 innings and allowed three hits, two earned runs, walked one, struck out none and hit two batters.

Game two: Headland 9, WSN 7
Down 8-0 after three innings, WSN rallied late in game two but suffered a 9-7 loss to see their season come to an end.
Down 8-0 after three innings, WSN cut the lead to 8-7 after six innings after they plated three runs in the fifth inning and four more in the sixth. Down one run to Headland, WSN gave up one in the top of the seventh and failed to score in their half of the inning to take the loss by two. WSN made five errors in the loss.
At the plate, Jared Cooper led WSN with two hits. Powell, Derrick Barton, Chavers, Malcolm Hawthorne, Shell and Jacobey Hawthorne all had hits. Cooper had a double in the loss while Powell had a triple.
Powell and Cooper had two RBIs in the loss while M. Hawthorne and Shell had one each.
On the mound, Cooper and Shell pitched with Cooper taking the loss.
Cooper went 1 2/3 innings and allowed two hits, five earned runs, walked five and struck out none while hitting one batter.
Shell went 5 1/3 innings and allowed seven hits, four runs, three earned, walked four and struck out two.
