New business coming to Brewton?

There could be another business coming soon to Brewton.
While no official discussion was held as to the type, the city council voted Monday on the first step to rezone a small section of property between Walgreens and Marvin’s from residential-1 to business-1.
The recommendation came from a unanimous vote by the city’s planning and zoning commission, said P&Z member Lawson Shipp.
“The property surrounding this one was rezoned years ago, but somehow this one was left out,” Shipp said. “Our only request is that entrance into the property be made from the Douglas Lane side, not the Douglas Avenue side because of traffic issues.”
The request was made by First Liberty LLC, Shipp said.
A public hearing on the request is set for May 25.
In other business, the council:
• voted to pursue a state transportation alternative program grant that could construct sidewalks in the area of Old Castleberry Road;
• agreed to move the Sept. 14 meeting to Sept. 8; and,
• awarded a five-year, 2 percent financing bid for a tractor to the Bank of Brewton.
