Facing off against Satsuma Tuesday in the class 4A area 1 softball tournament at UMS-Wright in Mobile, the W.S. Neal Lady Eagles suffered a 17-4 defeat in five innings. The loss for WSN dropped the Lady Eagles to 8-14-1 overall this season and also dropped them into the loser’s bracket of the tourney.
In the game Monday, Satsuma used an eight-run second inning to propel them to the 13-run win.
WSN trailed Satsuma 3-1 after one inning, but tied the game at 3-all in the top of the second. From there, Satsuma scored eight runs in the second inning and five more in the third inning to build a 16-3 lead. Both teams scored one run each in the fourth inning.
At the plate for WSN, Haleigh Dubose led with two hits while Karissa Johnson, Tori Wyatt, Madison Winchester, and Marishia Fraser had one hit each. Johnson and Winchester both led with two RBIs each.
Dubose took the loss in the pitching circle as she went four innings and allowed 11 hits, 17 runs, nine earned, walked six, and struck out five.
With the loss Tuesday, WSN will now play the loser of the UMS-Wright/Satsuma game Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
The loser of that game will be eliminated from area tourney play and will see their season end. The winner will advance to the championship game against the winner of the UMS-Wright/Satsuma game and will need to win twice to win the area championship.
Both the area runner-up and champion will advance to the South Regionals next week in Gulf Shores.
