The T.R. Miller Lady Tigers softball team will be heading to Gulf Shores Thursday, as they will play in the class 3A South Regionals.
TRM Lady Tiger’s head coach Greg White said his team is always very excited about being able to go play in the regionals in Gulf Shores.
“We have been to the regional tournament in Gulf Shores every year but one since 2009 and we hope to not ever miss going again,” White said. “It’s a major goal of our team each year to make it to the post season and we are very fortunate to be going. There are several schools that want to be there but they are not, so we take a lot of pride in the fact that we made it.”
White said his team did what they had to do to get to Gulf Shores and will be joined by other teams from the local area.
“It is also great to see that three of the four schools in the county are going to Gulf Shores also as Flomaton and Escambia County high school are playing at the regional tournament,” he said. “We wish those guys good luck.”
The Lady Tigers will begin play in the double elimination tournament at 1 p.m. against area 4 winner Dale County. TRM finished as the area 2 runner-up while Opp finished as the area 2 champions.
Other teams in the tournament include: Excel (area 1 winner), Cottage Hill (area 1 runner-up), Slocomb (area 3 winner), Wicksburg (area 3 runner-up), Pike County (area 4 runner-up)
White said Dale County is a very good team for his Lady Tigers to match up with in round one.
“We just have to go out there and do what got us to this point in the season,” he said. “We’ve had pretty good pitching all season from all of our pitchers and we have played really good defense all season. We have just got to dig down deep and work extra hard on our hitting as we prepare for the tournament.”
White said his team would have to put some runs on the board and give their pitching and defense some help.
“I am confident that we can compete with any team that is going to be there if we play the way we are capable,” White said. I’m excited about the opportunity.”
With a win in Thursday’s 1 p.m. game against Dale County, TRM would play at 7 p.m. on Field 2 against the Slocomb/Cottage Hill winner.
With a win in the 7 p.m., TRM would play again Friday at 11:30 a.m. on Field 3. With a loss in the 7 p.m. game, TRM would play again Friday at 10 a.m. on Field 2.
With a loss in Thursday’s 1 p.m. game, TRM would play the Slocomb/Cottage Hill loser at 5:30 p.m. Thursday on Field 6.
With a win in the 5:30 p.m. game, TRM would play at 10 a.m. Friday on Field 1. With a loss in the 5:30 p.m. game, TRM would be eliminated.
