Brewton Standard earns APA awards

The Brewton Standard earned five statewide awards in the Alabama Press Association’s Better Newspaper Contest.

The Alabama Press Association announced the winners Friday in 26 of the contest’s 41 categories. Winners in the other 15 categories, including General Excellence and Best Newspaper Website, will be announced at the 2015 APA Summer Convention on June 20 in Destin, Fla.

The Brewton Standard has already earned two first place awards; two second place awards and one third place awards.

First place wins include:

• Best Sports Single Event story, “He was a great man,” by Adam Robinson; and,

• Best Human Interest Column, “She’s a rock star,” by Stephanie Nelson.

Second place wins include:

• Best Special Section, “City of Blessings (Progress),” by staff; and,

• Best News Feature, “Miracle Girl,” by S. Nelson.

The third place award was for Best News Photo, “A little competition among friends,” by S. Nelson.

Seventy newspapers submitted 2,888 entries in the annual contest. Members of the Tennessee Press Association judged the entries.
