Family time is great

I am sure you have heard by now, but if you have not, there is a story about it on the front page of the sports section in today’s paper about T.R. Miller head volleyball and softball coach Greg White stepping down from his position.
The reason? He wants to spend more time with his family.
That’s certainly a sentiment I understand.
First off, I want to thank Coach White for helping me during my time here at the paper as sports editor. He has been a joy to work with.
When the news starting circulating that Coach White was stepping down, he not only told me it was true, but he did it by coming and meeting with me face-to-face.
To me, that says a lot about him as a man of great character.
As he sat on my living room couch and told me the decision that he and his family, I could tell it was a hard thing for him to decide on.
I know, and I am sure you know, how many hours

coaches put into their jobs. Basically, it is a year-round job than can consume an entire day.
Yet, that is the job these dedicated indviduals choose to do, and while they are with other kids doing their duty, they are missing time away from their own kids.
Coach White told me he was ready to be a daddy again. I told him I didn’t blame him. Other coaches have told me the same things before.
No, I am not a coach, but I can relate to them.
Just last week, my daughter completed her first season as a T-ball player.
Out of the whole season, I was able to make only three games.
Another friend of mine that I was able to talk with at the end-of-the-season cookout last Thursday said he was only able to make two games.
I love my family.
To my wife Shari and my daughter Hatlee, thanks for being my family, and I am sorry for the times I have not been able to be with you.
Family time is always a great time to have and I hope everyone that is reading this, coaches included, take time out of your busy schedules to visit with those family members.
To all my other coaching friends, thanks for all your help and for all you do, but be sure to enjoy those moments with your family when you can.
Coach White, I wish you the best in the next chapter of life. Here is to spending more time with your family.
I am sure I will see you in the gym or at the softball field, but this time, you’ll be in the stands.
