The sides of Old Castleberry Road, leading to Brewton Middle School, will soon sport new sidewalks.

Mayor Yank Lovelace Tuesday confirmed the city was awarded a $341,297 federal transportation alternative grant.

In April, the council voted to pursue the grant to add the sidewalks. Work will include    landscape and pedestrian improvements along Old Castleberry Road between the recreation center and Brewton Middle School. Officials agreed it “should be a nice sidewalk that greatly enhances the area.”

“I am excited that our team has been able to secure this grant that enhances our city and helps connect neighborhoods with community gathering places like Dogwood Hills and the new Brewton Middle School among other places,” Mayor Yank Lovelace said.

“In the past two years, by working together, we have secured in excess of $3.4 million in grant funds to improve infrastructure including water and sewer systems, roads, sidewalks, parks and other areas,” he said.

Lovelace said he hopes this announcement is the first of its kind in the coming months.
