Beautiful ballerinas will once again tiptoe in the Brewton YMCA.
This will be the third year the Andalusia Academy of Ballet will offer youth classes, and, director Meryane Murphy said the program was expanded because of last year’s success.
“The first year, we had five or six students,” Murphy said. “Last year, we had 20 or so, and this year, we have added a class for 9-year-olds and older hoping we can see even more growth.”
Taught by classically trained Kara Wilcox Foreman of Andalusia, the classes are offered for children as young as 3. Foreman has danced for more than 20 years. She is trained in ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical, modern, ballroom, music theater and acting. Before moving to Andalusia, she performed for two-and-a-half years with Disney’s Main Street U.S.A.
“I started when I was 2,” Foreman said. “I enjoy teaching. I love watching their eyes when they understand what they are doing.
“We decided to add another level for the older children so we can keep building on our program in Brewton,” she said.
Classes will be held on Tuesday afternoons, which is a change from last year’s Wednesday classes, Foreman said.
Cost is $214 per session for members and $285 for non-members.
Session No. 1 will begin on Aug. 18 and end in December. Session No. 2 will begin in January and end in May.
Students should have a black leotard, pink tights and ballet slippers.
An end of the year performance will be held, Foreman said.
