A suspected Brewton drug den was shut down last week after officers arrested six on a host of drug charges.

Sgt. Josh Stanley with the Brewton Police Department’s narcotics division said the investigation began when suspicious traffic activity at the Rankin Street home of Willie “Scoot” McCants was reported.

“Our residents are our ‘eyes and ears’ in the community, and this case is an excellent reason of why we take resident complaints very seriously,” Stanley said.

Officers executed a search warrant at the home and recovered an undisclosed amount of Morphine, Percocet, Klonipin, Methamphetamine, Suboxone, crack cocaine, powder cocaine, hydrocodone and Spice and assorted items of drug paraphernalia.

Also arrested at the home were Alvin Cunningham, 47, of Montgomery, and Freda B. Williams, 41, of Brewton. Each was charged with nine counts of possession of a controlled substance.

McCants faces the same charges as well as one count of distribution of a controlled substance.

Stanley said based on information gathered during the search, officers were able to make a second set of arrests.

“We received information that a group of Castleberry residents wanted to purchase narcotics from Mr. McCants,” Stanley said. “Officers were able to make contact, and the three were taken into custody after they attempted to make those purchases.”

Timothy Holliman, 23; Beverly Holliman, 42, and James Kast, 25, were arrested and charged with attempting to commit a controlled substance crime.

All were booked into the Escambia County Detention Center and held on bond. Some were released, while others remain behind bars.

On Nov. 16, McCants was re-arrested after complaints were again filed, Stanley said.

“This time, Mr. McCants was found to be in possession of methamphetamine and taken back into custody,” he said.

McCants was charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia and held in the county jail without bond.
