A W.S. Neal dance was shut down early Friday after rumors of a student with a handgun.

Superintendent John Knott told The Brewton Standard via telephone just after 10 p.m. that he is attempting to validate the information, but it was his understanding that there was never a gun on campus.

Knott, who is attending a state school board function in Birmingham, said, “I understand that there had been a call made of an accusation that a child may have a gun at the dance. The dance, which was a fundraiser for the softball team, was shut down as a precaution.

“As I know, they have not located the student (named in the call),” Knott said. “We’re in the process of getting more information, but as I know it, there was never a gun on campus.”

Attempts to contact East Brewton law enforcement were unsuccessful as they continue to investigate the allegation.

The Brewton Standard will update this story as more information becomes available.
