And Escambia County has a number of organizations that benefit tremendously from donations.

Among those are the United Fund, the Escambia County Chapter of Habitat for Humanity and Turtle Point Science Center.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, contributions are deductible in the year made.

The United Fund of Brewton and East Brewton campaign is racing toward its deadline for donations on Dec. 31, 2015. Anyone interested in making a donation this year contact a board member or mail a check on or before Dec. 31 to P.O. Box 34, Brewton, AL 36426.

More than 98 percent of the funds raised go to agencies in the Brewton and East Brewton area, and all donations are tax deductible due to the agency having 501(c)(3) status.
