The T.R. Miller baseball field is moving towards completion to be ready for the upcoming season.

Brewton City Schools Superintendent Dr. Kenneth Varner said the dugouts are nearing completion, as well as the concession stand and restrooms.

“The dug outs are nearing completion,” Varner said. “I think you will see some graphics and T.R. Miller color added to those before the season begins. The concession stand and restrooms are nearly complete and ready to use.  Only a few details remain on those.”

Varner said the grass is on track and the infield and mounds are scheduled to be built in the coming weeks.

“We have over seeded the field with rye grass,” he said.  “This will help both the appearance and condition of the field.  We have scheduled a contractor to build the infield and mounds with new clay in the next couple of weeks.  He will also set our bases and verify our foul poles.”

Varner said the new scoreboard has been delivered and is ready for installation in the next few weeks.

“It will be larger than the current scoreboard, and will include a line score,” he said.

Varner said the permanent bleachers will not be ready to install until after the upcoming baseball season. The old bleachers will be used for the time being.

“We are in the process of getting the permanent bleacher and press box package ready to bid, but those will not be available for installation until after the baseball season.

“In the meantime, Jerry Morris and Bill Henderson (inhouse maintenance personnel) have come up with an ingenious way to make use of the old baseball bleachers.  While not perfect, their solution will get us by until the permanent bleachers are installed.”

Varner said there is still some work to be done, but the finished product will be something to be proud of.

“The mild winter we’ve had so far has been a tremendous help in regards to the grass,” he said. “It still has a ways to go, but we are focusing on the final product.  We’ll have a great field and facility when this is finally finished.”
