A W.S. Neal middle school student was seriously injured Thursday after being struck by a car while walking to school.

The male student – whom sources identified as seventh grader Devin Spencer – was transported to D.W. McMillan Hospital and then air lighted to a Florida hospital for treatment.

The accident happened at approximately 7:30 a.m. on Williamson Street, near one of the apartment complexes, but not on school property.

Superintendent John Knott said he was informed of the accident “moments after it happened.”

“As of right now, all I know is that he was transported to the hospital, but I have no report as to his condition,” Knott said. “We want everyone to know we are praying for the student and the families involved.”

Knott said school counselors are available for students.

The Brewton Standard will update this story as more information becomes available.
