The W.S. Neal seventh grader hit by a car Thursday is making progress in his recovery.

Devon Spencer, an athlete and band member, was walking to school just before 7:30 a.m. when he was hit by a car. The identity of the driver remains unknown as the accident investigation continues, said East Brewton Police Chief Kenny Brazile Thursday evening.

Spencer was transported to D.W. McMillan Hospital and then air lighted to a Florida hospital for treatment.

Social media reports from friends and family say Spencer, who was critically injured in the accident, is responding to medial treatment; however, no official word as to his prognosis was immediately available.
