James Luke ‘Steve’ Evans

Brewton

 

James Luke “Steve” Evans, 74, of Brewton, passed away Sun., March 6, 2016, in Brewton.

Funeral services will be held today at 2 p.m. from the chapel of Craver’s Funeral Home with the Rev. Phillip Pettis officiating.

Interment will follow in Hanberry Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be  Sonny McGhee, Buddy McGhee, Chris Barkhouse, Kelly Cotten, Glenn McFadden, Greg Carter and Martin Wayne Kirkus.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the W.S. Neal High School Class of 1960.

He was a native and life long resident of Escambia County. He was a member of the W.S. Neal High School Class of 1960, and owned and operated Nutex Textile Mill for 51 years.

He was an avid hunter, fisherman and cattleman, and was a former member of the Cattlemen’s Association. He was a member of Hanberry Holiness Church.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Beverly Evans of Brewton; one son, James Autrey Evans of Brewton; two daughters, JoAnn Ward of Brewton, and Anita (Phil) Waguespack of Gulf Breeze, Fla.; one brother, Earl Evans of Brewton; two sisters, Bernice Howard and Polly Kirkus, both of Brewton; and four grandchildren, Elisabeth Evans, Kelsey Norris, Keaton Norris and Krista Waguespack.

Mary Alice Cheatham Davis

Flomaton

 

Mary Alice Cheatham Davis, 95, of Flomaton, passed away at D.W. McMillan Memorial Hospital in Brewton on Feb. 21, 2016.

Visitation was held on Wed., Feb. 24, at Flomaton Funeral Home Chapel beginning at 1:30 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. service time with Dr. Dustin Stockstill officiating and Flomaton Funeral Home directing.

Interment followed in Flomaton Cemetery, Flomaton.

Pallbearers were Jacob Davis, Don Clements, Trey Clements, Ryan Powell, Pat Jarvis and Maurice Barton.

She was born in Flomaton on Feb. 6, 1921, and lived there until she married.  After living in various places in Texas and Louisiana, she and her husband, Jessie Lynwood Davis, returned to Flomaton in 1964, and resided there for the last 52 years. She was the librarian for the Flomaton Public Library for 20 years and was the oldest member of First Baptist Church of Flomaton.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 74 years, Jessie Lynwood Davis, Sr.; grandson, Joseph Lynwood “Bo” Daniel; her parents, Pete Cheatham and Pearl Donald Cheatham; and four sisters and four brothers.

She is survived by her daughter, Ronda Lynne Daniel and two sons, Joseph Pete Davis (Annette) and Jesse Lynwood Davis, Jr., all of Brewton; grandchildren, Sally Renninger (Dave), Laura Reavis (Wayne), Jennifer Clements (Don), Mary Margaret Powell (Ryan), Jacob Davis and Mallory Davis; ten great-grandchildren, Shelby Reavis, Zackary Reavis, Trey Clements, Katie Clements, Kolby Powell, Laney Powell, Bella Powell, Kaelyn Reed, Jordyn Reed, Leia Bomboy; and brother, Donald Cheatham (Patricia) of Tullohoma, Tenn.

Clyde Eugene Mitchell Jr.

Brewton

 

Clyde Eugene Mitchell, Jr., 60, passed away Wed., March 2, 2016, at his Brewton residence.

A memorial service was held at Bethel Mennonite Church on Sun., March 6, 2016, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Woody Jackson officiating.

He was born in Brewton and had been a resident of South Florida before returning to Brewton 14 years ago.  He was a truck driver by trade, and was a member of the Dixonville Fire Department.  He was a member of Grace Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by a son, Clyde Eugene Mitchell, III.

He is survived by his wife of 14 years, Dena Morgan Mitchell of Brewton; sons, Jonathan Boswell of East Brewton, and Clifton Eugene Mitchell and Harvey Manford Boswell, both of Baldwin County; daughters, Candida Dawn Mitchell Queen of Wapanucka, Okla., Bonnie Mae Mitchell of Baldwin County, and Vellar Nicole Mitchell of Brewton; two brothers, George (Martha) Mitchell of East Brewton and Charles Mitchell of Lincoln, Ala.; a special friend, Tammy Ryals Mitchell of Lenox, Ala.; one grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

Charles Avon Scurlock

Brewton

 
Charles Avon Scurlock, 80, of Brewton, passed away on Wed., March 2, 2016, in a Mobile hospital.

Funeral services were held on Sat., March 5, 2016, at 2 p.m. at True Worship Assembly of God with Pastor Adam Peterson and Pastor Jeffrey Scurlock officiating and Craver’s Funeral Home directing.

Interment followed at Union Cemetery in Brewton.

He was born in Panama City, Fla., and had been a resident of Brewton since 1957, coming from Gulf County, Fla.  He worked as a bleach pulp operator at Container Corp. for over 40 years. He was a member of True Worship Assembly of God.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Beatrice Scurlock; and a grandson, Connor Ross McArdle.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Naomi Lee Scurlock of Brewton; two sons, the Rev. Jeffrey (Felicia) Scurlock and Gary (Tammy) Scurlock, both of Brewton; four daughters, Lucretia (Joe) McArdle of Montgomery, Ala., Teresa (Johnny) McLelland of Excel, Ala., Belinda (Bobby) Tingen of Castleberry, and Tracy (Paul) Lowery of Brewton; one sister, Linda Faircloth of Panama City; sixteen grandchildren; and nineteen great-grandchildren.

Arthur Bruce Long

Brewton

 

Arthur Bruce Long, 92, of Brewton, went to be with his Lord and Saviour on March 5, 2016, at Hospice of West Alabama in Tuscaloosa.

Graveside services will be held on March 12, at noon at Good Hope Cemetery in Dozier, Ala.

He was born Nov. 15, 1923 in Double Springs, Ala., to Henry Eugene and Ruby Baggett Long. He graduated from T.R. Miller High School and Troy State Teachers College.

In 1947 he married Jean Ophelia Moore and together they had four children, Melinda, Bo (Gina), Mike (Kay) and Amy Stephens (Tommy).

He served in World War II in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Sangamon, taught school, coached high school sports and worked for over 30 years at the local paper mill. He was an avid golfer, an active member of his church and a faithful father and husband.

He is survived by his wife, Jean; his four children; two granddaughters, Hannah Reeves (Steve) and Leah Wright (Jerome);  and three great-grandchildren.

 

Tony Glenn Jordan

Saraland

 

Tony Glenn Jordan, 42, of Station Street Saraland, passed away Mon., March 7, 2016, at his residence after a brief illness.

Visitation will be held today, from 6 until 8 p.m. at Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.

Funeral services are scheduled for Thurs., March 10, at 2 p.m. at Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Doug Greer officiating.

Interment will follow in Elim Cemetery in the Roberts Community in Brewton with Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home directing.

He was a native and long time resident of Brewton. He was of the Christian faith, and a 1992 graduate of W.S. Neal High School. He served in the U.S. Air Force, and was employed with Quala-Wash. He was an avid Florida Gator fan and enjoyed fishing.

He is survived by his father, Roger (Teresa Parker) Jordan of Wallace; his mother, Deborah (Allen) Morris of East Brewton; his wife, Heather Jordan of Saraland; two sons, Brennan Jordan of Brewton, and Triton Jordan of Wallace; a daughter, Elise Preud’Homme of Pensacola, Fla.; three sisters, April Jordan of Brewton, and Michelle Hurley and Leslie Franklin, both of Brewton; three nieces and two nephews.

He was preceded in death by his step-mother, Debra Thomason Jordan; and step-father, Jeff “Bud” Butts.

Margaret Frances Golden Higdon

Flomaton

 

Margaret Frances Golden Higdon, 83, passed away on Tues., Feb. 16, 2016, in Brewton.

Funeral services were held Fri., Feb. 19, at 2 p.m. at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles Day officiating.

Burial followed at the Little Escambia Cemetery with Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Homes, LLC of Atmore, in charge of all arrangements.

Pallbearers were Kenny Higdon, Jr., Cleve Johnson, Brady Lambeth, Jason Lambeth, Marcus Mathis and Daniel Higdon.

Honorary pallbearers were Ishiah Day and Josh Day.

She was a native and life long resident of Flomaton. She was retired from Monsanto with 32 years of service, a member of the Lighthouse Baptist Church; a charter member of the church, and was the only woman on the Board of Trustees at the time.

She is preceded in death by her parents, J.B. and Zora Golden; one sister; five brothers; a son, Ronnie Higdon and great-grandson, Ronnie Daniel Higdon.

She is survived by two sons, Danny (Mildred) Higdon and Kenny (Becky) Higdon, Sr., both of Flomaton; two daughters, Shirley Lambeth of Flomaton; and Sandra Howell of Atmore; eleven grandchildren; twenty-six great -grandchildren; six great-great grandchildren; special nieces, Linda (Robert) Holt and Debbie (Allen) Smith, both of Flomaton; and special nephew, Wayne (Danita) Lee of Robertsdale.

Sandra Sue Hooks

Gulf Shores

 

Sandra Sue Hooks, 64, of Gulf Shores, passed away Thurs., March 3, 2016, in a Pensacola hospital.

Funeral services were held on Sun., March 6, at 2 p.m. from the chapel of Craver’s Funeral Home with Dr. Dustin Stockstill officiating.

Interment followed in Baggett’s Chapel Cemetery.

She was born in Cullman, and had been a resident of Gulf Shores for the past 22 years coming from Brewton.  She had worked as a job clerk for Hoar Construction and she was a member of Lagoon Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Anthony Hooks of Gulf Shores; two sons, Ben Ryan Bradsher of Gulf Shores, and Tony Hooks of McKenzie; two brothers, Jack Junior Dillashaw (Cletis) of Michigan, and Alex Dillashaw (Ealon) of Wetumpka; one sister, JoAnn Baggett of Brewton; and two grandchildren.
